Every sealing supplier says the same four words: strong adhesion, consistent quality, reliable sealing. They are not claims you can act on. This is what each one has to mean before it is worth anything to you, and how to check it before a drum reaches your line.
“Consistent quality” means batch to batch, or it means nothing
A first sample is always good. It has to be: it was made with attention, often in small quantity, by people who knew where it was going. The number that matters is not that sample, it is the spread between it and the tenth delivery nine months later.
Ask for the property that governs your process, and ask for its tolerance band, not its nominal value. For a cold seal latex that usually means solids content and viscosity. For a heat seal lacquer it means solids, viscosity and seal initiation temperature. A supplier who can state a band is measuring it. A supplier who repeats the nominal figure is describing the first sample again.
Then ask what happens when a batch falls outside it, because that answer tells you whether the band is real. Held and reworked, or shipped with a note?
Adhesion and seal integrity are not the same property
These two get used interchangeably in marketing copy and they behave differently on a line.
Adhesion is whether the coating stays attached to the substrate. It is a coating-to-film question, and it fails as picking, transfer, or a coating that lifts at the slit edge.
Seal integrity is whether the closed seam holds its contents. It is a coating-to-coating question, and it fails as channel leaks, weak seams under drop, or a pack that opens in transit.
A coating can have excellent adhesion and poor seal integrity, or the reverse. If a datasheet gives you one figure for “bond strength” and nothing else, it has told you about one of the two and left you to guess which.
Substrate compatibility: the list is a starting point, not an answer
Cold seal and heat seal chemistry is normally quoted against a family of substrates: BOPP, CPP, PET, PE, and the laminated and metallised structures built from them. That list is useful and it is also where most disappointment starts, because two films with the same three-letter name are not the same film.
What actually decides compatibility:
- Surface treatment level, in dyne. A corona-treated OPP at 38 dynes and the same OPP at 42 behave differently, and treatment decays in storage. Untreated faces need a release lacquer under cold seal or the reel blocks to itself.
- Slip and anti-block additives. These migrate to the surface by design. That is what they are for, and it is also what can sit between your coating and the film.
- Metallisation. A metallised surface is a different substrate from the polymer under it, with its own adhesion behaviour and its own failure mode: metal transfer.
- Age of the reel. Treatment level and additive bloom both move with time and storage temperature.
So the useful question is not “is this compatible with PET?” It is “is this compatible with the PET I am actually buying, at the treatment level it arrives at, after four weeks in my warehouse?”
“High resistance and durability” – resistance to what, exactly
Durability is only meaningful once you name the stress. Decide which of these your pack actually sees, and test only those:
- Blocking. The coated reel must not bond to itself in storage or transit, particularly in a warm warehouse. This is the single most common cold seal complaint and it is a storage-condition question as much as a chemistry one.
- Thermal exposure. Pasteurisation, hot fill, or simply a container crossing a hot climate.
- Chemical contact. Fats and oils are the usual aggressor in food; surfactants in non-food.
- Mechanical. Drop, vibration and compression in the distribution chain.
- Shelf life of the coated web before it is sealed, which is not the same as the shelf life of the drum.
A supplier who asks which of these apply is formulating. One who claims all of them is selling.
Price per kilogram is the wrong comparison
Two coatings quoted at different prices are almost never doing the same amount of work, and the drum price hides at least four things:
- Coat weight. A cheaper coating applied at a higher gram per square metre can cost more per thousand packs. Compare cost per pack, not per kilo.
- Line speed. If a coating forces a slower line or a longer dwell, that is a throughput cost that never appears on the invoice.
- Waste. A narrow operating window produces more start-up scrap and more rejects on film variation.
- Documentation. If the technical data sheet and safety data sheet do not match your structure, someone on your side spends time closing that gap, and a customer audit can stop a shipment.
The honest framing is not paying less or being promised more. It is the right performance at the right total cost, and the only way to know that number is to run the trial.
Supply reliability is part of the specification
A coating that performs and arrives late has not solved your problem. Before a grade is designed into a structure, settle:
- Pack size and format, and whether it suits your decanting and your storage.
- Lead time, and lead time when you need it in a hurry, which is a different number.
- Minimum order quantity, against your real consumption rate rather than your best month.
- Batch traceability, so a complaint can be tied to a specific batch and a specific retained sample.
- Documentation on request: TDS, SDS and a declaration of compliance matched to your structure. For food contact in the EU that declaration is not optional, and it has to be reissued whenever composition or production changes substantially.
A qualification that takes a week and settles the question
Most of this can be closed quickly if the trial is designed rather than improvised.
- Send the real structure. Layer by layer, with treatment level, and a roll from current production rather than an archive sample.
- State the line. Type, real running speed, jaw temperature and dwell, fill weight, seal geometry.
- Ask for the operating window, not a value. For heat seal, the range of jaw temperature that produces an acceptable seal. A wide window is worth more than a good number at one temperature, because your line will not hold one temperature.
- Test hot, not just cold. Cooled seal strength under ASTM F88 will not reveal a hot tack failure, and hot tack is what holds while the pack is being filled.
- Run a blocking check. Coated reel, warm store, realistic duration. This is the failure that shows up after you have committed.
- Repeat on a second batch. This is the step everyone skips, and it is the only one that actually tests consistency.
