How it works

How the two seals actually work

Both close a pack, and that is where the similarity ends. One bonds under pressure alone, the other needs heat. Here is each process, step by step.

Cold-seal

1. Prep the web

Paper or film is coated with a cohesive that bonds only to itself.

2. Align the layers

Coated surfaces face each other as the material feeds through.

3. Apply pressure

Nip rollers press and seal instantly, with no heat at any point.

4. Integrate the zipper

A slider or press-to-close zipper is added during pouch making.

5. Quality check

Peel tests confirm seal strength for cold storage and transit.

Heat-seal

1. Select a sealant film

A laminate with an LDPE inner layer, chosen for clean thermal bonding.

2. Position the pouch

The web is set in the VFFS or HFFS former, sealant layers facing each other.

3. Heat and press

Thermal energy melts the LDPE while the jaws press the layers together.

4. Cool and set

As the jaws open, the molten layer solidifies into a strong seam.

5. Integrate the zipper

The zipper track is sealed to the top for a reclosable pack.

01HEAT SEAL

One grade rarely serves both

Food lid foils and pharmaceutical blister foils overlap only at the top of the range. That is why the useful question is never whether a heat seal lacquer is good, but which application, on which substrate, at which temperature.

02COLD SEAL

No heat, at any point in the cycle

Cold seal is a water-based latex that bonds only to itself, under nip pressure alone. Removing heat removes three waiting periods from the line, and every risk of thermal damage to the product.
